Renal medicine
The department of Renal Medicine is involved in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic
kidney disease. We provide general nephrology clinics, work up for dialysis and transplants, and renal
replacement treatment with all dialysis modalities.
This is a regional service, covering the central North Island, with over 450 patients on dialysis, including two
large home based programmes of peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis, and satellite haemodialysis units
in Tauranga, Rotorua, Whakatane and Gisborne. There are 175 patients with functioning transplants under
regular follow up. This service is supported by a dedicated 16 bed ward with an attached acute dialysis
unit. We work closely with colleagues in interventional radiology, vascular surgery, pathology and urology.

Rheumatology unit
Servicing the wider Waikato population, we are largely an out-patient service based primarily at Waikato
Hospital with regular outreach clinics in Thames, Tokoroa and Te Kuiti. We cover the broad range of
musculoskeletal disease with some sub-specialty clinics, eg scleroderma, vasculits, ankylosing spondylitis,
metabolic bone disease and a visiting paediatric rheumatology clinic. Our unit is actively involved in
industry-based research.
Who we are:
At present the unit has three part-time and one full time rheumatologists. We have one advanced registrar
trainee position and one rotating registrar position shared with Infectious Diseases. We are strongly
supported by two clinical nurse specialist positions, a research nurse and other allied health staff.
We provide:
Exposure to a wide range of rheumatic disease in clinic with some in-patient consultations. There is a
weekly radiology meeting and a monthly regional rheumatology meeting, in addition to the medical unit
programme.

Thames Hospital
Thames Hospital is a rural secondary hospital that provides accident & emergency, general
medical service; general surgical and rehabilitation inpatient and outpatient services for a
resident population of 45,000. As the area is a holiday/retirement area the population is
150,000 in summer.
Thames Hospital is located on the picturesque Coromandel Peninsula with easy access to
many scenic beaches, walking and tramping tracks through scenic native busy and excellent
boating and fishing facilities. Thames is just over a one hour drive from the major cities of
Hamilton, Auckland and Tauranga.
Thames hospital inpatient unit of 54 beds is a beautiful facility.
There are three SHO posts on rotation to Waikato Hospital. Two of the posts are in medicine
and one in surgery/rehabilitation. Thames Hospital provides excellent hands on experience in
all areas including the Emergency Department, where you will be well supported.
In the inpatient areas there are opportunities to participate in a range of surgeries, accompanied
by an anaesthetist in theatre, endoscopy training or in the ward processes and procedures in
the acute area.
A rural hospital allowance is negotiated with all applicants.
