Resident Medical Officers…
Older Persons and Rehabilitation (OPR)
The Older Person and Rehabilitation service provides interdisciplinary assessment, treatment and
rehabilitation services for adults (18 years and over). These interdisciplinary teams are led by physicians in
geriatric medicine and rehabilitation. There are five consultant
physicians attached to this service. Resident medical staff includes
five registrars including senior registrars, four house officers and
one SHO.
Waikato District Health Board is committed to expanding the Older
Persons and Rehabilitation Service and a ten year plan named
“Agewise” has been drawn up following wide consultation
.
OP&R have moved to a new purpose built building.
OPR2 ward has 29 beds, primarily for general
assessment, treatment and rehabilitation (AT&R).
OPR4 is primarily for comprehensive stroke service
but also general AT&R; OPR3 caters for orthopaedic
but also general AT&R patients. The Older People
Acute Liaison team has RMOs working at actively
seeking suitable patients for our service from within
the Waikato Hospital. Mental Health Services for Older
People will also have beds within the same building.
Resident medical officers gain experience in dealing
with a broad range of conditions and are important members of interdisciplinary team.
Supported Transfer And Accelerated Rehabilitation Team
(
START)
is a new service.
START
provides support for patients discharging from hospital into the community and prevents hospital
admissions by accepting patients directly from the ED.
Convalescent Care is offered Rhoda Read Hospital in Morrinsville and Matariki Hospital in Te Awamutu.
Resident medical officers also have the opportunity of seeing new patients who are being referred by their
general practitioners to outpatient clinics and this work is carried out under the supervision of consultant
physicians.
Resident medical officers work in the OP&RS for a period of three months and rotate with other sub-
specialities of medicine. For those who are interested, longer periods of appointment will be available. This
area of medicine is viewed as an excellent training ground for those wishing to pursue GP training.
Teaching programmes include weekly rehabilitation education meetings, grand rounds, medical unit case
presentations, trainee lectures and radiology sessions.
