Surgical Services
Waikato District Health Board services a full range of surgical options at Waikato Hospital,
proving varied and interesting exposure to the surgical field. We have committed training
programmes and supportive teams. The following services are provided under Surgical
Services
General Surgery / Trauma
The General Surgery service at Waikato Hospital provides a comprehensive service to a population
of 350,000 people. In addition, there is the provision of tertiary care to 780,000 people in the central
north island.
The General Surgical Department has specialists in colo-rectal, breast and endocrine, upper GI and breast
surgery. Examples of tertiary services include liver resection, bariatric surgery and complex laparoscopic
surgery peritonectomy, and other surgery for conditions of the large bowel and advanced endocrine
surgery. Mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgery are performed as combined cases in conjunction
with plastic surgery.
There are 12full day operating theatre sessions and 5 acute sessions eight endoscopy sessions (including
ERCP) and 12 clinics per week.
General Surgery has a regional model of care, focusing on Waikato and Thames with visiting services
provided to Te Kuiti, Taumarunui and Tokoroa. We cover the Midlands tertiary services including
Tarawhati. Taranaki Bay of Plenty and Lakes DHB
The General Surgery Department has a strong focus on teaching and includes weekly meetings, which
cover radiology, breast multi-disciplinary discussion, histopathology, audit and morbidity and mortality
meetings. There are also weekly formal registrar presentations, alongside practical teaching.
The Trauma Service has been established at Waikato Hospital. This service lead by our trauma surgeon
involves a daily round of trauma patients, providing management advice, ensuring overall coordination of
care, assisting in discharge planning, collecting information on the injured patients and educating health
personnel. The Trauma Fellow is attached to the General Surgery Service and as such is involved with
some operating and participates in the acute general surgical out-of- hours roster.

All modules required by FANZCA training are available at Waikato Hospital
Mentors are available from a friendly and supportive department.
Midland Regional Training Rotation:
Waikato Hospital is part of the Midland Regional Anaesthetic Training Rotation which also includes Rotorua
and Tauranga Hospitals. It offers a full range of work experiences in centres with great lifestyle options. It is
possible to fulfill all FANZCA requirements for training within the Midland scheme. While formal rotation
does not occur between hospitals, movement of suitable trainees within affiliated hospitals is facilitated in
order for them to fulfill their training requirements.
