There are approximately 20 theatre sessions per week. Six of these are dedicated to orthopaedic
trauma. We also have theatre capacity in the weekends for acutes. allowing registrars to have

Senior registrars are encouraged to attend relevant courses and conferences in New Zealand and
Australia.
There are weekly formal teaching sessions and opportunities are taken to teach informally
throughout the day.
Dermatology service
This is an outpatient service provided by specialist staff. Minor surgical treatments are carried out as are
ultra violet light treatments by trained nursing staff. Dermatology provides treatment for all skin conditions.
Outreach clinics are provided to Rotorua and New Plymouth.
Inpatients are accommodated in the plastics and reconstructive ward. Mole-mapping and imaging are used
to prioritise skin lesions.

Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery
Maxillofacial & oral surgery is concerned with the treatment and care of patients with congenital, traumatic,
malignant and other pathological conditions of the mouth and face. The maxillofacial & oral surgery service
provides secondary and tertiary inpatient and outpatient services for the Waikato area and Midland region.
Waikato Hospital is the Level 6 tertiary centre for the Midland region. The service is a key component of
the multi-specialty team, managing Midland region patients with major head and neck disorders and
children with cleft lip and palate. The service runs a busy outpatient service as well as having inpatient
facilities shared with the plastics and reconstructive service. We attract patients from all over New Zealand
for TMJ replacements

Tutorials with oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The department publishes annually and presents
papers at national and international meetings. Senior staff regularly attend national and
international conferences to meet continuing education requirements and update their skills and
knowledge.

Urology services
Provision of Urology services for the Midland area are undertaken by Urology Services Ltd (USL), a
joint venture company whose shareholders are Urologic Ltd and the Waikato District Health Board.
This differs from all other clinical services at Waikato Hospital, as the urologists are not employed by
Waikato District Health Board, but form part of USL. The resourced facilities provided by Waikato District
Health Board include all nursing, junior medical and allied health staff, operating theatres, clinics etc.
Clinical services are provided from Waikato Hospital and the surrounding regional hospital facilities.
The urologists have specific interests in the fields of reconstruction, malignancy, stone management,
incontinence and uro-dynamics. They also act as a tertiary referral centre for the areas of Gisborne and
Taranaki.
