Anaesthesia
The Department of Anaesthesia is a very active unit, providing anaesthetic services to one of the largest
single site hospitals in New Zealand. We serve as a tertiary level hospital with over 21,000 anaesthetic
procedures being performed by our staff per year. All surgical specialities are provided. We also have a
very active research group led by Professor Jamie Sleigh.
Our department is accredited for specialist training by the Australian and New Zealand College of
Anaesthetists (ANZCA), for three years anaesthesia and six months intensive care. Our trainees enjoy a
high level of success with the College exams.
In 2013 the Meade Clinical Centre campus development resulted in the completion of a much revamped
and expanded theatre complex. We now provide regular anaesthetic services for 25 locations (operating
theatres, cath lab, interventional radiology etc) in the main theatre block as well as at least five other sites
around the rest of the hospital (delivery suite, ECT, brachytherapy etc).
