Ophthalmology department
This department services both outpatient and inpatient care, with an increasing emphasis on
ambulatory and day surgery. Inpatient beds are in Ward 17. The ward shares its beds with
Otolaryngology. Patients are admitted for care and treatment of medical and surgical diseases
of the visual system. As well as providing general ophthalmology services to the people of the
Waikato region, tertiary services are provided to the Midland region (population 800,000). The
ophthalmology outpatient department runs multiple general sessions every day. The service
also provides clinics for diabetes, glaucoma, paediatric, corneal and retinal patients. The
ophthalmology consultants are fellowship trained in glaucoma, paediatric ophthalmology,
oculoplastics & orbital surgery, vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina & anterior segment surgery
,
neuro-ophthalmology.

We provide:
Formal and informal education and training sessions are available. Senior RMOs are
encouraged to attend relevant courses and conferences both in New Zealand and
overseas.
Work within a multidisciplinary team, with a weekly MDT meeting on the ward.
Part of multidisciplinary team at the weekly head and neck cancer meeting
Outreach services extend to the Midland region - in Thames, Tokoroa, Te Kuiti,
Taumaranui and Gisborne.
Otolaryngology service
All conditions affecting the ear, nose and throat, except otoneurology are
treated by the service. Major head and neck surgery is a key feature of the
service. Head and neck cancer patients come as far afield as Gisborne
and Tauranga.
An international auditing programme is currently being established for
clinical audits. The inpatient area is shared with ophthalmology and has 16
beds. A greater emphasis is being placed on ambulatory surgery.
The audiology service is closely aligned with the service and provides
service to all age groups including neonates and undertakes both inpatient
and outpatient work. Services provided include audiology assessment,
auditory brainstem response and other specialist assessments, hearing-aid assessment and fitting. The
screening of all newborn infants is provided by the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme.

Women's Heath
Obstetrics
The obstetric service provides facilities and specialist care for local and regional patients
requiring elective or emergency treatments. We provide secondary services for the Waikato
DHB region and tertiary for the Midland region. There are approximately 3,700 deliveries per
annum.
Our delivery suite has seven birthing rooms, an operating theatre, a three-bedded recovery area
and a two-bedded high dependency unit. A Women’s Assessment Unit (WAU) of 12 beds is
situated adjacent to the delivery suite and provides services to acute and semi-urgent pregnant
women of greater than 20 weeks gestation.
There is a 20 bed combined antenatal and gynaecological ward and a 24 bed postnatal ward.

Our service is a great opportunity for you to gain experience in dealing with a variety of
gynaecological conditions and treatments.
We have an outpatient department and a gynaecology ward for those patients who require
major surgery or emergency treatment of which there is the opportunity for you to observe /
assist in theatre.

through Auckland University. We would recommend spending six
