Child Health - Waikids
The Waikato Child Health service is a dynamic forward-thinking service. Care is integrated from
community to acute care with good working relationships between professionals who continue
to provide a child-friendly service.
Our 48 bed inpatient service comprises of secondary and tertiary paediatric medical and
surgical services, acute and elective. Additionally we have a 41 cot newborn intensive care,
with the retrieval and transfer of sick neonates by air.
We provide outpatient services for paediatric medicine and surgery (both secondary and
tertiary) – region-wide (e.g. Tokoroa, Thames etc). Paediatric surgery includes neonatal surgery
and is the tertiary service for the Midland region. We are accredited for paediatric surgical
training.

Update and Starship Grand Round (four-six hours/week). The service has 3 paediatricians with
an academic portfolio with the University of Auckland, providing excellent teaching and research
opportunities.
Additionally involvement with outpatient clinics for both SHOs and registrars makes this the
essential experience for anyone considering a future in General Practice, ED or sub-speciality
surgeries (ENT, Orthopaedics, Plastics or Ophthalmology)

Orthopaedic department
The Orthopaedics Unit provides inpatient and outpatient services to people of all ages with musculoskeletal
problems. Our 54 in-patient beds cater for a diverse range of elective cases including hip, shoulder and
elbow replacements as well as trauma cases, including complex pelvic reconstructions. The beds are
spread across two wards; orthopaedic paediatrics are collocated with other paediatric surgical patients in a
separate ward. The majority of elective cases attend pre-admission clinics prior to theatre. Twice a week
there are structured multi-disciplinary teaching sessions. We run pre-admission clinics for most orthopaedic
patients. These have been very successful in ensuring that discharge planning is commenced as soon as
possible.
The outpatient area sees approximately 1400 patients per month in fracture clinics and consultant clinics
and the plaster room, whilst there are approximately 300 inpatient admissions per month.
We have a high trauma caseload with dedicated theatre lists.
