The training programme:
The training programme at Waikato Hospital is one of the largest in New Zealand. At present there are
nine accredited registrar positions. The training course for the FRANZCR qualification is of five years’
duration. Examinations for Part I are taken in September of the first year and Part II in the fourth year,
consisting of pathology and radiodiagnosis.
1st year registrar post:
One or two positions for a first year Registrar are usually available each year.
Requirements for applicants.
Applicants should:
be New Zealand citizens or residents.
have completed at least two years of post-graduate experience by the time the applicant expects
to begin radiology training.

Employment contract:
Registrars accepted for training are recognized as being on an open-ended contract until completion of
their five year training period subject to satisfactory performance as assessed by regular performance
reviews. Appointments for a sixth year will be considered to enable registrars to complete college exams,
subject to otherwise satisfactory performance, but registrar training appointments beyond this will be
unlikely.

Plastics department
The Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery Unit comprises both inpatient and outpatient facilities. A
comprehensive range of services is offered including: congenital malformations such as cleft palate,
malignant conditions of the skin, trauma and burns including specialised micro-surgery to repair and
reconstruct nerves, tendons and skin. As the Regional Burns Unit for the Midlands region, we accept major
burns patients.
The inpatient facility consists of a 25 bed ward with specialist nursing staff. The outpatient department is
co-located with hand therapy services and dermatology. Minor operative procedures are carried out within
the clinic and LA procedures are run daily. Major head and neck surgery and treatment is performed in
conjunction with other specialists such as otolaryngology, oncology, maxillofacial and ophthalmology.

We provide:
Education and training is available in both formal and informal settings. Senior RMOs are well
supported in attending relevant courses and conferences in Australia and New Zealand.
We provide weekly clinics in Thames, Tauranga as well as regular clinics to New Plymouth,
Rotorua and Gisborne.
Registrars have opportunities for their own operating lists.
Neurosurgery department
Neurological Surgery is that specialty which provides the operative management of patients with disorders
of the brain, meninges, and spinal cord. This is a relatively new secondary and tertiary service for the
Midland region and contributes to the management of patients with major head trauma as well as
pathological disorders.

We provide:
Formal and informal teaching. Access to multi-specialty teaching. Involvement with radiological and
operative procedures with our own dedicated theatre. We provide an outpatient service for the Midland
region. We do all neurosurgery procedures except procedures for epilepsy and major pediatric surgery
